Joyce Morse - Grand Marshall Long time Scio City Manager Joyce Morse will be the Grand Marshall of this year's parade. Joyce was born in Scio and has lived here almost her entire life. She has been a driving force in the community for many years. Her community involvement began as a member of the Scio City Council for three years before starting to work for the city. Joyce became City Recorder on July 1, 1978. Eventually the city changed the title of her job to City Manager, a job she held for many years, before recently retiring. She has been active in the community as a member of the ZCBJ Hall Board, the Lions club, and helping with running the entrance gate for the Sheep Dog Trials. After retirement Joyce plans to spend more time with her family including her eight grandchildren and great grand-daughter born March 10, 2008. |
Bernie Newcomb - Honored Citizen Bernie, or Bing, as he was nicknamed by his brother, grew up in Scio. He attended Scio from third grade until he graduated in 1961 as the class valedictorian. He retired in 1998 and has spent the last few years restoring his home in Palo Alto, traveling and working with his Bernard A Newcomb Foundation. Nearly 30 years ago Bernie co-founded E*Trade with Bill Porter. He wrote the code that made it possible to buy and sell stock online, revolutionizing stock trading world wide. After retiring through the Newcomb Foundation he made possible a new 550 seat football stadium and all weather track at Scio High School. Recently he donated money for a new baseball scoreboard and aided the Linn County Lamb and Wool Fair Association's purchasing of the parking lot for the historic ZCBJ Hall. During the past years he has contributed more than twenty-two million dollars to a wide variety of deserving projects. |
