course and trial field Outrun - The sheep are let out at the top of the field and the handler sends the dog either to his right or left on an outrun. The dog is to get behind the sheep before the handler gives another command. Lift - The dog then "lifts" the sheep, which mean to start the sheep toward the handler who is standing at the post. Fetch - the dog brings the sheep to the handler through a set of gates set up in the middle of the field. The dog then brings the sheep around the post where the handler is standing. Drive - He then drives the sheep to a set of gate and through them. Next, he drives them across the field to another set of gates. During the third leg of the drive the dog brings the sheep back to the handler who is now standing in a shedding ring. Shed - The handler then must separate some of the sheep out of the bunch. Sometimes there are collars on the dog and the marked sheep are to be "shed" from the rest. Pen - The dog then gathers the sheep together and herds them into a pen. Single - Some trials include singling out a single sheep after the pen. This means the dog must separate and hold a single sheep in the shedding ring. Points: The team starts out with either 110 or 120 points depending on whether the handler is to single out a sheep after the pen. The judge then takes away points for any mistakes the team makes. The winner is the team with the most points at the end of the trial. Entry form for 2008 Sheep Dog Trials 2007 Trial Results Questions:
